This weekend marks the anniversary of September 11, 2001 - a day that I will remember for the rest of my life.
It's so weird to think about how my parents can talk about what happened with JKF, where they were, what they remember seeing on the news. This day in 2001 starts off the list of things I will be able to tell my kids about...
- the twin towers
- the pentagon, a field in PA
- anthrax
- the war on Iraq
- the first black president
- ground zero & the mosque fight
There are some many other things... but those are the ones that stick out as the most significant in my mind. Many movies and books have been made and written to talk about the fateful day that changed this country.
Today, I want to share my memories.
I was sixteen years old and school had just started. I was sitting in my US History class that morning. (Ironic, I know.) After class started the school's journalism teacher came into the room and told our teacher, Mr. Roegner to turn on the news. He did, just before the second plane hit the towers - we watched that happen. It was so surreal. I remember thinking 'Is this really happening?' I remember texting my Mom - telling her to check out the news, or find a television.
The rest of the day at school was spent with classwork while the tv's were on the news - the Principal made a few announcements... but the day went on as normal. I didn't personally know anyone that was in NY that day - or in DC or PA. The enormity hit me though - this was an attack against our country. This was the day that made me as patriotic as I am today.
I'm not an advocate of war - but I believe in fighting for our country and I pray for those men and women overseas fighting for this country, and my continued freedom! I thank all the people in the armed forces, the policemen, the fireman and even the doctors that were there in NY that day, trying to save people!
Please keep America in mind this weekend. Remember that day and all the families that lost loved ones all over the world because of that day! I'm so very thankful that despite the tragedy this country has seen, that we are still supporting our troops and the other service men and women of the United States!
